What size is a Canadian passport photo?

Canada uses a larger photo than most countries: 50 by 70 mm, which is 591 by 827 pixels at 300 DPI. It is noticeably bigger than the 35 by 45 mm size used in the UK, the EU and India, so a photo taken for one of those cannot simply be reused.

Head size and framing

Within that frame the face must measure between 31 and 36 mm from the chin to the crown of the head. Because the photo is taller than the common standard, there is more space above and below the face, so crop generously rather than tightly. Use the crop tool first if you need to reframe.

The photographer's details on the back

A paper application needs two identical prints, and the photographer's name, complete studio address and the date the photo was taken must be stamped or handwritten on the back. Stick-on labels are not accepted, so a home-printed photo will usually be refused. This page is for getting the digital file to the right size and shape, for online forms and for handing the correct crop to a print shop.

The other rules

A plain white background, a neutral expression with the mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible, uniform lighting with no shadows or reflections, and a photo taken no more than six months before you apply. Check the current Government of Canada checklist before submitting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Canadian passport photo size in pixels?

591 by 827 pixels at 300 DPI, which is the 50 by 70 mm requirement.

Can I use a 35 by 45 mm photo for a Canadian passport?

No. Canada requires 50 by 70 mm, a larger and differently proportioned photo, so it has to be re-cropped from the original rather than scaled up.

Does the photo need details on the back?

Yes. For a paper application the photographer's name, complete studio address and the date the photo was taken go on the back, stamped or handwritten. Stick-on labels are not accepted.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The resize happens entirely in your browser.
