What size is a passport photo?
Most countries, including India, the UK and the EU, use a 35 by 45 mm passport photo. Printed at 300 DPI, the resolution most photo labs and online forms expect, that works out to 413 by 531 pixels. The United States is the main exception: a US passport or visa photo is square, 2 by 2 inches, which is 600 by 600 pixels at 300 DPI.

Getting the framing right
Official rules usually ask for a plain light background, a neutral expression and the head centred and filling most of the frame, though the exact head height differs by country: the UK asks for 29 to 34 mm, Canada for 31 to 36 mm and the US for 25 to 35 mm, so check your country's page or checklist for the figure that applies. Crop to the right framing first with the crop tool, then come back here to set the exact pixel size. If the form also limits the file size, run the result through the image compressor.

These are the sizes for a passport. Several countries use a different size for a visa or for a national ID card, so check which document you are applying for: a UAE visa photo is 43 by 55 mm rather than the 40 by 60 mm passport photo, a Vietnamese visa photo is 35 by 45 mm rather than 40 by 60, and a photo for a Brazilian visa is the square 2 by 2 inch format rather than the 50 by 70 mm the Federal Police ask for on a Brazilian passport. In India a PAN card photo is 2.5 by 3.5 cm, not the passport size.
