What moves the EUR/USD rate
The Euro, used in the eurozone, responds mainly to European Central Bank policy, eurozone growth and inflation, and energy prices, which hit the bloc harder than most. The US Dollar, used in the United States, responds mainly to Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, US inflation data and global risk appetite, since the dollar is the currency people buy when they want safety. An exchange rate is a ratio, so it moves when either side moves, which is why a pair can drift even in a week when nothing happened in one of the two countries.
Reading the chart before you convert
A single day’s rate says very little on its own. Switch the chart to 1Y and check where today sits inside the range: near the top, the bottom, or the middle. For a large one-off conversion that context is worth more than trying to time the market, and the high and low figures beside the chart give you the range at a glance.
