How VAT (moms) works in Sweden

The standard rate is 25%. Adding VAT (moms) means multiplying the net price by 1.25. Removing it is the step people get wrong: you divide the gross by 1.25, you do not subtract 25%. Taking 25% off a VAT (moms)-inclusive total leaves you short, because the 25% was charged on the smaller net figure, not on the total.

Reduced and zero rates

Not everything is charged at 25%. In Sweden the reduced and zero rates cover 12% on food, hotels and restaurants, and 6% on books, newspapers and passenger transport. The calculator above accepts any rate, so switch to a custom rate when you are invoicing something outside the standard band.

Registering and charging

Sweden has one of the highest standard rates in the EU, which makes the reduced bands worth checking carefully. Until you are registered you must not charge VAT (moms), and once you are, your invoices need your registration number, the rate applied and the VAT (moms) amount shown separately. Keep the arithmetic on the invoice consistent with your filings: rounding each line differently is a common source of small mismatches.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT (moms) rate in Sweden?

The standard rate is 25%. Reduced or zero rates apply to 12% on food, hotels and restaurants, and 6% on books, newspapers and passenger transport.

How do I add 25% VAT (moms) to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1.25. For example 1,000 net becomes 1,250 gross, of which 250 is VAT (moms).

How do I remove 25% VAT (moms) from a total?

Divide the gross amount by 1.25. A 1,000 inclusive total is 800 net plus 200 of VAT (moms). Subtracting 25% from the total gives the wrong answer.
