Italy VAT Calculator
Add 22% VAT (IVA) to a net price, or work backwards from a VAT (IVA)-inclusive total, for Italy. Free and instant.
Presets show each country’s standard rate. Most countries also have reduced or zero rates for specific goods (food, books, medicine); enter those with the custom rate box. Rates change by law, so confirm the current rate for your category before invoicing.
How VAT (IVA) works in Italy
The standard rate is 22%. Adding VAT (IVA) means multiplying the net price by 1.22. Removing it is the step people get wrong: you divide the gross by 1.22, you do not subtract 22%. Taking 22% off a VAT (IVA)-inclusive total leaves you short, because the 22% was charged on the smaller net figure, not on the total.
Adding 22% VAT (IVA)
| Net amount | VAT (IVA) at 22% | Gross amount |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 22 | 122 |
| 250 | 55 | 305 |
| 500 | 110 | 610 |
| 1,000 | 220 | 1,220 |
| 2,500 | 550 | 3,050 |
| 5,000 | 1,100 | 6,100 |
| 10,000 | 2,200 | 12,200 |
Removing 22% VAT (IVA) from a gross amount
Use this direction when you have a receipt or an inclusive price and need the net figure for your books:
| Gross amount | Net amount | VAT (IVA) included |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 81.97 | 18.03 |
| 250 | 204.92 | 45.08 |
| 500 | 409.84 | 90.16 |
| 1,000 | 819.67 | 180.33 |
| 2,500 | 2,049.18 | 450.82 |
| 5,000 | 4,098.36 | 901.64 |
| 10,000 | 8,196.72 | 1,803.28 |
Reduced and zero rates
Not everything is charged at 22%. In Italy the reduced and zero rates cover 10% on many foods, water and tourism, 5% on some social services, and 4% on staple foods, books and medical aids. The calculator above accepts any rate, so switch to a custom rate when you are invoicing something outside the standard band.
Registering and charging
Electronic invoicing through the SDI system is mandatory for most domestic transactions. Until you are registered you must not charge VAT (IVA), and once you are, your invoices need your registration number, the rate applied and the VAT (IVA) amount shown separately. Keep the arithmetic on the invoice consistent with your filings: rounding each line differently is a common source of small mismatches.

Frequently asked questions
What is the VAT (IVA) rate in Italy?
The standard rate is 22%. Reduced or zero rates apply to 10% on many foods, water and tourism, 5% on some social services, and 4% on staple foods, books and medical aids.
How do I add 22% VAT (IVA) to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1.22. For example 1,000 net becomes 1,220 gross, of which 220 is VAT (IVA).
How do I remove 22% VAT (IVA) from a total?
Divide the gross amount by 1.22. A 1,000 inclusive total is 819.67 net plus 180.33 of VAT (IVA). Subtracting 22% from the total gives the wrong answer.
