Netherlands VAT Calculator
Add 21% VAT (BTW) to a net price, or work backwards from a VAT (BTW)-inclusive total, for the Netherlands. Free and instant.
Presets show each country’s standard rate. Most countries also have reduced or zero rates for specific goods (food, books, medicine); enter those with the custom rate box. Rates change by law, so confirm the current rate for your category before invoicing.
How VAT (BTW) works in the Netherlands
The standard rate is 21%. Adding VAT (BTW) means multiplying the net price by 1.21. Removing it is the step people get wrong: you divide the gross by 1.21, you do not subtract 21%. Taking 21% off a VAT (BTW)-inclusive total leaves you short, because the 21% was charged on the smaller net figure, not on the total.
Adding 21% VAT (BTW)
| Net amount | VAT (BTW) at 21% | Gross amount |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 21 | 121 |
| 250 | 52.50 | 302.50 |
| 500 | 105 | 605 |
| 1,000 | 210 | 1,210 |
| 2,500 | 525 | 3,025 |
| 5,000 | 1,050 | 6,050 |
| 10,000 | 2,100 | 12,100 |
Removing 21% VAT (BTW) from a gross amount
Use this direction when you have a receipt or an inclusive price and need the net figure for your books:
| Gross amount | Net amount | VAT (BTW) included |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 82.64 | 17.36 |
| 250 | 206.61 | 43.39 |
| 500 | 413.22 | 86.78 |
| 1,000 | 826.45 | 173.55 |
| 2,500 | 2,066.12 | 433.88 |
| 5,000 | 4,132.23 | 867.77 |
| 10,000 | 8,264.46 | 1,735.54 |
Reduced and zero rates
Not everything is charged at 21%. In the Netherlands the reduced and zero rates cover 9% on food, medicines, books, and passenger transport. The calculator above accepts any rate, so switch to a custom rate when you are invoicing something outside the standard band.
Registering and charging
The reverse charge applies to many business-to-business supplies, which moves the VAT to the buyer. Until you are registered you must not charge VAT (BTW), and once you are, your invoices need your registration number, the rate applied and the VAT (BTW) amount shown separately. Keep the arithmetic on the invoice consistent with your filings: rounding each line differently is a common source of small mismatches.

Frequently asked questions
What is the VAT (BTW) rate in the Netherlands?
The standard rate is 21%. Reduced or zero rates apply to 9% on food, medicines, books, and passenger transport.
How do I add 21% VAT (BTW) to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1.21. For example 1,000 net becomes 1,210 gross, of which 210 is VAT (BTW).
How do I remove 21% VAT (BTW) from a total?
Divide the gross amount by 1.21. A 1,000 inclusive total is 826.45 net plus 173.55 of VAT (BTW). Subtracting 21% from the total gives the wrong answer.
