Gross amount

How VAT (Umsatzsteuer) works in Germany

The standard rate is 19%. Adding VAT (Umsatzsteuer) means multiplying the net price by 1.19. Removing it is the step people get wrong: you divide the gross by 1.19, you do not subtract 19%. Taking 19% off a VAT (Umsatzsteuer)-inclusive total leaves you short, because the 19% was charged on the smaller net figure, not on the total.

Reduced and zero rates

Not everything is charged at 19%. In Germany the reduced and zero rates cover 7% on food, books, newspapers, public transport and cultural events. The calculator above accepts any rate, so switch to a custom rate when you are invoicing something outside the standard band.

Registering and charging

Small businesses under the Kleinunternehmerregelung can stay outside the VAT system below the turnover limit. Until you are registered you must not charge VAT (Umsatzsteuer), and once you are, your invoices need your registration number, the rate applied and the VAT (Umsatzsteuer) amount shown separately. Keep the arithmetic on the invoice consistent with your filings: rounding each line differently is a common source of small mismatches.

How do I add 19% VAT (Umsatzsteuer) to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1.19. For example 1,000 net becomes 1,190 gross, of which 190 is VAT (Umsatzsteuer).

How do I remove 19% VAT (Umsatzsteuer) from a total?
